Are you passionate about horticulture and eager to work in the beautiful city grounds of O'Fallon? The City of O'Fallon is seeking a knowledgeable and dependable Horticultural Specialist to join our Parks Department's Landscape Division. If you have experience cultivating vibrant landscapes and maintaining municipal grounds, we'd love to hear from you! Our Horticultural Specialists earn competitive pay of $24.02 to $36.03 hourly (top of grade) with an expected starting rate of $24.02 to $24.73 hourly, depending on qualifications and experience. Generally, your schedule will be Monday - Friday from 7 am to 3:30.

Key Responsibilities

As a Horticultural Specialist, you will:

  • Cultivate flowers, shrubs, trees, and turf using pruning, planting, fertilization, integrated pest management, and irrigation techniques.

  • Maintain and enhance municipal landscapes to create aesthetically pleasing environments.

  • Install and manage landscape beds, ensuring proper care and nutrition for plants.

  • Identify and address plant diseases, pests, and nutritional disorders using an agronomically sound approach.

  • Operate, schedule, and service irrigation systems to optimize plant health.

  • Train seasonal and temporary staff while enforcing safety policies and procedures.

  • Assist in the preparation for festivals, special events, and snow removal operations.

  • Provide input on budgets for upcoming projects, maintenance, and equipment.

Qualifications & Skills

We're looking for candidates who have:

  • A degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field.

  • At least three years of experience successfully growing plants within a comprehensive grounds care program.

  • Proven ability to identify and care for a variety of landscape plants.

  • Expertise in plant nutrition, weed control, pest management, and disease prevention.

  • Experience coordinating and supervising a small crew.

  • Knowledge of irrigation system operation and maintenance.
