About the Job:
Sandy Spring Bank is currently recruiting for a Senior Mortgage Underwriter. This role requires an in-depth and thorough knowledge of the Bank's mortgage processing, underwriting, and settlement functions. Underwrites and evaluates Retail and Correspondent residential mortgage applications originated by the Bank that will be held in the bank’s portfolio and sold to investors through the secondary market.
MAJOR JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. UNDERWRITING OF LOANS
Demonstrates exceptional underwriting skills with new retail and correspondent mortgage loan requests. Performs a financial analysis on more difficult/complex residential mortgage requests and determines strengths and weaknesses. Approves or denies mortgage loans based upon established guidelines. Prepares and presents requests for approval over authority limit. Assists in resolving problems that may arise during credit analysis, providing solutions including any possible counter-offers to the original loan request.
2. PROJECT REVIEW
Completes detailed reviews of Condominium project documentation as they relate to residential mortgage loans to assure the project and related documents meet Bank and secondary market investor requirements. Reviews may include budgets, financial statements, by-laws, covenants, conditions and restrictions, insurance and questionnaires. Reviews Affordable Dwelling projects and Inclusionary Zone projects to assure the project represents an acceptable credit risk for the bank. Communicates project status to appropriate individuals and maintains a database of all project reviews and outcome.
2. LOAN QUALITY
Assists in quality control reviews and audits from both internal and external sources, which may require research, investigation, and written response. Documents exceptions to policy with regard to underwriting guidelines and compliance of the submitted applications for review. Reviews loan submissions for compliance with all regulations. May prepare and administer various department risk management reports.
3. TECHNICAL RESOURCE
Functions as a technical resource to members of the Mortgage team, to include junior underwriters, loan processors and mortgage bankers. Responds to questions and requests promptly. Works in cooperation with management to resolve questions, complaints, and or errors.
4. CLIENT COMMUNICATION
Provides remarkable client service by effectively communicating and cooperating with all internal and external partners. Maintains an open line of communication with the processor and the mortgage banker, assisting with questions and providing any additional information required. The nature of the communication activities involve distributing and exchanging information; working with confidential information, following up with clients, and composing correspondence. Works to resolve any client issues proactively and diplomatically.

Required Skills
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Work requires a broad level of professional experience in mortgage banking to include thorough knowledge of mortgage underwriting guidelines and related regulations. A minimum of five years of mortgage underwriting experience is required. Intermediate PC skills are necessary.
Advanced problem-solving skills are needed to find solutions to problems that are technically complex and require the collection, interpretation and analysis of data from diverse sources Analytical ability is required in researching problems and providing possible solutions. Must be able to evaluate alternative courses of action and their consequences on the organization.
Work requires regular internal and external contact in furnishing and obtaining information. Tact and discretion in obtaining cooperation and understanding is needed. Appropriate interpersonal skills needed to maintain a positive rapport with customers and co-workers.
Work is under minimal supervision requiring independent judgment and assessment of risk.
Holds FHA and VA underwriter designations.
SPECIFIC PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires reasonable mobility in and around the work area. Ability to use standard computer and phone systems is required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal office environment where there is almost no discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, or other disagreeable elements.
Work includes little or no potential exposure to hazardous conditions.
Must be able to travel to remote company and/or client locations.

Compensation Information
At Sandy Spring Bank, compensation is one part of our total rewards package. Compensation within the range will depend on your skills, qualifications, education, experience, and location.
