Job Description

Position will be open until filled.

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs general labor and maintenance of City public gardens, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs manual labor tasks in order to maintain clean, safe, attractive and user-friendly City public gardens; maintains greenhouse, gardens, lawns, flower beds, and other cultivated areas as assigned; follows all safety rules and regulations to minimize risk of accidents.
• Assists with garden and greenhouse planting, soil preparations, and implementation of projects.
• Performs a variety of garden and grounds maintenance activities, including fertilizing, weed control, pest control, mowing, trimming and watering procedures.
• Cleans up trash and debris; prunes and trims bushes and flora; plants and extracts flowers and plant life; loads and hauls materials.
• Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.
• Assures that hazardous materials are cleaned up in a timely manner and controlled according to City policy and procedures.
• Performs other related duties as required.

• Hours: Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (30-minute lunch). May work weekends, holidays, and some over-time as needed.
• Regular and timely attendance is required.
• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent; and prefer two years of general work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

• Must possess a valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record is required.
• Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.

Required Knowledge of:

• City policies and procedures.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Required Skill in:

• Operating and maintaining power and hand tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

• Work is performed outdoors; Ability to perform strenuous labor for extended periods of time; work in extreme weather conditions as needed, and lift and carry up to 94 pounds.
