The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Police Department (CRITPD) provides law enforcement of 31 treaty fishing access sites and other tribal lands along a 150-mile stretch of the Columbia River from Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam, ensuring that fish are caught in accordance with regulations. Dispatchers/Communication Officers work in the CRITPD Headquarters in Hood River, answering calls for assistance, dispatching officers to respond, and keeping logs of all activities. This role uses radio communications extensively to support Police Officers who are in the field.

CRITFC’s Dispatchers/Communications Officers come from a variety of backgrounds and don’t need prior police or security experience. All Dispatchers/Communications Officers will receive extensive initial training. It is useful but not required to have experience in community services, social services, medical services, the military, or other jobs where safety and good communication are critical.

Responsibilities

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls to the CRITFC Police Department. Be the first point of contact for people in need of assistance. Provide stability in stressful situations.
  • Determine what type of situation is occurring and send the appropriate responder, either a CRITPD officer, or fire or medical personnel.
  • Maintain telephone, radio, and department logs. Keeping accurate logs is an important aspect of this role.
  • Perform general office duties and assist in the smooth functioning of the office. Maintain office equipment and supplies.
  • Learn and maintain Oregon Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) and U.S. Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification. Earn and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Learn and maintain a strong working knowledge of the Department Operations Manual, Communication Division Procedures, and Lexipol policies.
  • Learn and maintain a strong working knowledge of tribal fishing regulations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and respect for the unique customs and traditions of the four-member tribes, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon, the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, and the Nez Perce Tribe.

Qualifications

  • A strong track record of attendance and being on time for work. A reputation for being someone who can be counted on to not miss shifts.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Ability to listen well.
  • Ability to learn to speak clearly and concisely on a police radio.
  • In order to become Department of Public Safety Standards & Training (DPSST) qualified, you must be able to meet minimum moral fitness and ethical qualifications and pass a background investigation with no convictions of felonies. Candidates with a misdemeanor criminal history will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Supervision

  • Supervision Received : This position works under the direct supervision of the Dispatch Supervisor.
  • Supervision Given : No supervisory authority.

Working Conditions

Primarily sedentary work in an office setting. Rotating 24/7 shifts, including holidays. Some overtime may be necessary to ensure shift coverage. Some overnight travel for initial and ongoing training.

CRITFC Motor Vehicle Policy

This job occasionally requires driving a CRITFC vehicle or your own vehicle for business (mileage compensated), and therefore you must be able to meet the terms of the CRITFC Motor Vehicle policy. Per the policy, applicants are required to have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record for the past three years. This includes a three-year record clear of the following:

  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Suspension or revoked license
  • No more than two at-fault accidents
  • No more than one major violation or two minor violations.

Work Schedule: 4×10 shifts, working four days per week with three days off. All team members rotate day/swing/night shifts every three months.
