The People-Sentinel seeks a full-time multimedia reporter to join its newsroom. This award-winning, locally-owned weekly newspaper serves the rural South Carolina counties of Barnwell & Allendale, just a few hours from the state’s coast and mountains.

Job Summary: This position is at the forefront of local journalism, responsible for investigating, writing, and delivering news stories on a variety of topics that inform and engage our community. Strong writing abilities are a must, but additional duties include photography of local events, producing content for special sections, publishing to the newspaper’s website and social media, creating weekly highlight videos, and representing the newspaper at community events. The ideal candidate will have good people skills, a positive attitude and solid work ethic, along with the ability to stay focused amid a variety of distractions.

Responsibilities:

  1. News Coverage: Identify and research newsworthy events, developments, and stories within the local community. It will be important to pitch story ideas to the publisher/editor.
  2. Interviewing: Conduct thorough interviews with key stakeholders, community members, and experts to gather information, quotes, and insights for your articles.
  3. Writing: Write clear, compelling, and accurate articles that adhere to journalistic standards and meet the needs of our readership.
  4. Investigative Reporting: Pursue in-depth investigations into important issues affecting our community, providing readers with comprehensive and insightful coverage.
  5. Feature Writing: Develop human interest stories and profiles that resonate with our audience, showcasing the diversity and richness of our community.
  6. Photography: Capture relevant photographs to accompany your articles, ensuring visual storytelling enhances the reader's experience.
  7. Editing and Proofreading: Review and edit your own work for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and adherence to style guidelines before submission.
  8. Deadline Management: Manage your time effectively to meet strict deadlines for article submission and publication, prioritizing tasks as needed to ensure timely delivery.
  9. Community Engagement: Foster relationships with sources and community members to stay informed about local news and developments, actively seeking out story leads and tips.
  10. Digital Content: Adapt and optimize articles for online publication, contributing to our website and social media platforms to extend the reach of our content. This includes planning and producing weekly highlight videos and regular feature videos that engage and inform the community.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred.
  2. Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to convey complex information in a clear and engaging manner.
  3. Strong interviewing and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and elicit valuable insights from sources.
  4. Proficiency in AP style and other journalistic standards, with a commitment to accuracy and fact-checking.
  5. Familiarity with digital media tools and platforms, including content management systems, video editing and social media, preferred.
  6. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  7. Ethical conduct and a dedication to upholding the principles of fair and objective journalism.
  8. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and some holidays as needed for event coverage and breaking news.
  9. Valid driver’s license and a clean driving history are required.

Salary & Benefits: Salary range is $30,000 to $40,000. Compensation is dependent on education, experience, and skills. Paid holidays and paid vacation.
