Job Description

Choral Director at First Congregational Church, UCC of South Portland First Congregational Church, an Open and Affirming* member of the United Church of Christ seeks a part-time Co-Director of Music/Choral Director. We seek the following qualities:

• Skilled in working with volunteers, both adults and young people across the age spectrum. You easily establish a rapport because you are personable, patient, flexible, engaging, and playful.
• A strong teacher who can meet folks where they are and guide them in their practice.
• Musically diverse with some breadth of knowledge and ability to find and lead music of varying styles and genres in response to a theme.
• A collaborative, creative team planner!
• Adept at communicating openly and respectfully with all staff and parishioners.
• Fully vaccinated
• Prepared to embrace the FCC mission and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Responsibilities include: Directing the adult choir, including weekly rehearsals and Sunday morning worship. Coaching volunteers to encourage their gifts and help them to share their music with the congregation. Coordinating music for each Sunday (and special services) with solos and ensembles, emphasizing a variety of music styles. Engaging young people, creating space for them to explore music and contribute to worship, toward cultivating a children’s music program, in collaboration with the worship planning team. Collaborating with pastoral and music staff to plan and lead music for worship that is welcoming to all and connected to liturgical season and weekly theme. Choosing and ordering appropriate music in coordination with the ministerial/music staff. Overseeing the sound system and contributing to audio and video worship needs, including occasional video editing. Cooperating with pastors, staff, and the Spiritual Life and Worship Team, on other related duties as requested. Ensuring and reporting that all streamed music is in accordance with our licensing.
