Assistant Curator in Climate Physics: Atmosphere or Ocean The Division of Physical Sciences at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) invites applications for an Assistant‑level, tenure‑track appointment in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS). The role is intended for Early Career Scientists, typically within 10 years of receiving a Ph.D., who have a Doctoral degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography, Climate Science, Physics or a closely related field and a record of post‑doctoral research experience. Position Summary This appointment seeks an innovative researcher and educator specializing in the physics of climate systems, with emphasis on high‑impact research on atmospheric or oceanic processes and their relation to human and natural systems including ecosystems or biodiversity. The successful candidate will demonstrate scientific creativity and the potential to establish an independent research program, mentor graduate students and post‑doctoral scholars, and establish effective collaborations and partnerships within and outside AMNH. Research focus may include, but is not limited to, ocean‑atmosphere‑land interactions, climate system feedbacks, and climate sensitivities to ocean or atmosphere dynamics, with a strong connection to broader ecosystem questions, biodiversity, evolution or climate adaptation. Responsibilities Conduct original scientific research in climate science, including developing and publishing peer‑reviewed research, securing external funding, and presenting findings at national and international conferences. Participate actively in AMNH’s exhibitions, educational programs, and public outreach activities related to climate change, sustainability and society. Engage in public outreach in line with AMNH’s strategic goal to address the local and global impact of climate change and biodiversity loss through collaboration across science, education, exhibitions, and external partners. Collaborate with colleagues within AMNH (including the Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science Residency Program) and externally with institutions such as NASA GISS, Columbia University and the Graduate Center of CUNY. Mentor undergraduate research, graduate students, and post‑doctoral scholars, fostering an inclusive and collegial research environment. Within approximately 10 years of receiving a Ph.D. Preferred Qualifications Experience with large climate data sets and high‑performance computing resources. Salary and Benefits The expected salary range for this position is $125,000 – $142,000 per year. Salary will be determined based on the nature of the work and the scope of responsibilities, and may be influenced by skills, training, education and experience.
