Job Description

SUMMARY

Share your passion for nature and adventure! As a Naturalist/Program Assistant, you'll guide visitors through the wonders of the Backcountry Wilderness Area, leading hikes, sparking curiosity, and creating unforgettable outdoor experiences. The Naturalist/Program Assistant engages with visitors to foster a deeper understanding of the Backcountry Wilderness Area. Responsibilities include leading interpretive programs, assisting with guided hikes, and maintaining biofact stations along the Discovery Trail. This volunteer will ensure a safe and educational experience for all participants while promoting environmental stewardship.

LOCATION

The Backcountry Wilderness Area is an 8,200-acre conservation property that serves as habitat for diverse species and close-to-home access to nature for our community. Surrounded by development, this protected space offers a rare refuge for wildlife and an opportunity for the community to connect with nature.

This individual will be based out of Base Camp, the heart of Camp Backcountry and home to our barnyard animals. As the starting point for most programs, Base Camp is a hub for outdoor education, adventure, and conservation efforts. Base Camp is also home to the Discovery Trail, a short, self-guided interpretive trail where visitors can walk, explore, and learn more about the plants and wildlife on the property.

This volunteer will perform activities outdoors in various weather conditions and may be required to hike on uneven terrain, lift and carry materials, and engage with visitors in a dynamic environment. Volunteers should be comfortable working outside, interacting with the public, and ensuring the safety of participants while fostering a meaningful connection to nature.

DAYS AND TIMES

We're flexible and committed to ensuring you have the support and training you need to succeed. We ask for at least one shift per month but will work with you to create a schedule that meets your needs. We want to make sure you're able to stay with us long-term and contribute meaningfully to our team and mission, while also making the experience worthwhile for you.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide exceptional customer service and information about the Backcountry Wilderness Area to program participants and visitors.
  • Rove the Discovery Trail, engaging visitors in discussions about local flora, fauna, and conservation topics.
  • Lead and support biofact stations, presenting hands-on learning opportunities about Colorado wildlife and ecology.
  • Assist with guided hikes and nature programs, focusing on topics such as animal tracking, bird identification, and seasonal changes in the ecosystem.
  • Encourage scientific inquiry by facilitating observations, data collection, and discussions on natural patterns and wildlife behaviors.
  • Promote responsible recreation and environmental stewardship through education on conservation principles and Leave No Trace ethics.
  • Maintain safety and enforce program expectations on trails and during programs.
  • Assist in the setup, upkeep, and organization of educational materials, biofacts, and interpretive signage.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Colorado's ecosystems, native wildlife, and plant life.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with people of all ages.
  • Enthusiasm for environmental education and outdoor experiences.
  • Ability to perform tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Experience in interpretation, education, or natural sciences is a plus but not required.
