GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Help us use social media and other digital tools to build and develop our online presence and get results. We seek a digital strategist and content manager who, when news is breaking, knows just the right tools to use to respond online immediately and effectively. We are looking for a quick and creative thinker and a strong and detail-oriented online writer, someone who is the first to know about the latest social media platforms and technology, and who has existing technical and strategic expertise. The senior digital content manager will work with Public Citizen’s Communications Director to develop digital strategy for the organization, and can produce clever and eye-catching graphics on deadline, shoot and edit video, and use analytics to improve the performance of social media channels and our overall web presence to advance progressive ideals. The senior digital content manager will oversee multifaceted social media programs, campaigns and strategies to further public education, communications, advocacy and organizational brand-building goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage Public Citizen’s social media program, in collaboration with the digital and communications teams, and train others in the organization where needed.
- Elevate the organization’s brand, fine tune its voice online, head rapid response on social channels and lead in overall implementation of Public Citizen’s social and digital strategy. Set and track goals, build out digital campaigns that align with organizational objectives and leverage analytics to drive results.
- Creatively adapt Public Citizen’s digital communications strategy to evolving events and changing circumstances and oversee Public Citizen’s in-time social media response to breaking news. Create and direct content that maximizes opportunities for message amplification.
- Devise, build, and implement multiplatform social media campaigns from the ground up. Work with Public Citizen staff to ensure that our digital campaigns support and supplement organizational objectives. These include public education, legislative action, mobilizing grassroots activists and expanding Public Citizen’s organizational visibility and reach.
- Lead and build out Public Citizen’s video program. Identify opportunities for video – for social media and beyond – and carry projects through to completion, including script writing, shooting, animating, editing, producing, and packaging for the organization’s digital channels.
- Function as a lead on creative campaigns related to design or involving digital elements; identifying outside of the box opportunities for brand promotion, message amplification and media attention and executing those projects.
- Work with cross-organizational teams and national coalition partners to develop joint strategies for social media campaigns. Maintain relationships with social media and digital campaign staffs of coalition partners.
- Demonstrate a clear ability to develop tactics and campaigns that drive the business goals; earned media, audience growth, owned engagement, acquisition, reach, churn mitigation and more.
- Use materials and messages distributed, tracked and evaluated through digital properties to gather real-time feedback.
- Determine platforms stakeholders use and where discussions occur; create products ideal for sharing on standard channels and innovative sites and optimize platforms to promote interaction.
- Ensure that all of Public Citizen’s digital platforms – including the website – effectively tell the story of our work and support our network of activists.
- Monitor trends in social media for new effective platforms and practices.
- Train staff on the basics of Twitter (X), Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other widely used social media platforms.
- Enhance skills relating to video editing, analytics programs, graphics programs and SEO.
Build the organization’s strategy for emerging platforms (e.g., Snapchat, TikTok, Reels) - Overall the senior digital content manager will lead management of all digital content; developing and maintaining online (digital) assets and materials and creation of digital marketing campaigns; providing regular reporting and analysis on website and all digital platform performance; execution of thought leadership digital distribution, and collaboration with internal stakeholders, to maximize performance across paid and owned marketing channels.

REQUIREMENTS Knowledge : Strong knowledge of social media platforms and best practices. Solid proficiency with graphics and video softwares (
animation softwares like Video Scribe a plus, but not required ), including Adobe Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Audition. Knowledge of social media management and monitoring tools including Sprout Social and Crowdtangle. Strong knowledge of content management systems. Knowledge of HTML and web standards (including accessibility standards). Knowledge of Facebook analytics to assess the performance of Facebook ads campaigns, as well as Google Analytics to assess the performance of Google ad campaigns as well as website content performance. Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office environment (Word, Access, Excel and Powerpoint). Familiarity with legislative campaigning a plus.
Work Experience : At least five years of social media, video production, online organizing or communications experience or a comparable mix of relevant experience. Proven ability to develop and implement creative social media strategies and campaigns that can generate high audience engagement. At least two years of video production experience through employment required. Experience with Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Pay Per Click (PPC) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies a plus. Experience with using advanced analytics and with micro-targeting required. Some experience training others on social media platforms and best practices necessary.
Skills : Excellent project management, meme design, online writing, video shooting and editing, and computer skills required. Ability to make complex policy proposals accessible and compelling to a variety of audiences. Strong interpersonal skills. Production skills including composition/layering, photo editing and animation. Solid understanding of the tools required to effectively implement a robust social media program, including Facebook and Google ads creation, segmenting and tracking.

Able to work well with a wide range of people in a team-based environment and within an organization. Adaptable to different work processes, styles and fluid work agendas. Ability to inspire others, give clear direction and cooperate with peers within and outside organization. Winning attitude and sense of humor required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive salary between $98,226 and 119,852 dependent on relevant experience and qualifications and generous benefits package. Public Citizen staff are represented by SEIU Local 500 and our salaries are set according to our collective bargaining agreement. Public Citizen does not negotiate salaries.
