JOB TITLE:

Branding Iron Editor in Chief

JOB PURPOSE:

To provide overall supervision of the Branding Iron newspaper

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Have overall responsibility for the newspaper.
  2. Work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
  3. Verify and edit newspaper copy prior to composition.
  4. Prepare newspaper "dummy" for news and Page 1 material.
  5. Supervise the work of newspaper section editors.
  6. Supervise the work of newspaper's copy editor.
  7. Supervise the work of the photo editor.
  8. Supervise the work of news staff writers.
  9. Work collaboratively with the BI Online editor and the Social Media editor to ensure information is being posted to the Web site in a timely manner.
  10. Produce articles for both the print and online editions.
  11. Supervise merit raises.
  12. Supervise staff payroll.
  13. Provide material for editorial, op-ed pages.
  14. Dummy editorial, op-ed pages.
  15. Serve as public relations person for the paper.
  16. Conduct staff meetings as necessary.
  17. Attend Student Media Board meetings as ex-officio member.
  18. Choose syndicate material that will appear in paper.
  19. Serve as a direct line to adviser, sales manager, production coordinator, and business manager.
  20. Supervise newsroom budget.
  21. Assist in preparing budget as needed.
  22. Serve as a contact person with Communication and Mass Media Department.
  23. Provide written Editorial Policy to the Student Media Board at the first fall meeting.
  24. Superintend the operations of the newspaper production and deadline schedules.
  25. Need to be involved in active recruitment for class visits.
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Full-time student
  2. Minimum 2.5 GPA
  3. Newspaper experience, including writing news stories.
  4. Must be available for training Aug. 21 and 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Some supervisory experience.
  2. Basic knowledge of what goes into a good newspaper story, as well as other newspaper editorial content.
  3. Some prior newspaper experience.
  4. Knowledge of AP style or willingness to learn.
