POLICE CADET

(Part-Time Temporary Position Up to 12 Months)

$16.50/hourly -$18.00/hourly

DEFINITION

The purpose of the Police Cadet Internship is to provide Oakland Housing Authority residents, with a work site opportunity/experience for up to 12 months. The work site experience is designed to train residents on the job in a variety of clerical and some paraprofessional functions in the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department, as well as in various Oakland Housing Authority departments. Cadets will assume the role of a helper to staff as he/she learns on the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Age: At least 17.5 but no older than 20.5 at the time of appointment
  • Graduation from high school or GED; Minimum GPA 2.0
  • Enrolled in college or trade school with a student load of 12 units or equivalent.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who best meet the requirements for the Cadet Program will be invited to compete in an oral examination. A List of Qualifiers will be established, and interviews will be conducted. Several candidates will be selected for Internship employment.


As a Cadet, you will be considered a temporary employee, and assigned to work no more than 20 hours a week. Part time employees are not eligible to receive holiday pay or vacation leave, health benefits, retirement benefits, or life insurance benefits. Part-time employees are subject to three (3) sick days per year.

Upon completion of the Program, Cadets may be eligible for consideration to be re-assigned to the program, promotion if qualifications are met, as well as other entry-level positions at the Authority. Cadets may also obtain the experience and develop the necessary skills and abilities to compete for jobs in public and private organizations.

For some positions, an experience/training rating and/or written evaluation of candidates will be used in lieu of the oral examination. The names of the highest-ranking candidates will be placed on the List of Qualifiers, and the final selection will be made from this List. College degrees or units required for the position will be verified prior to final appointment. If this information cannot be verified for a candidate, the candidate's name will not be placed on the List of Qualifiers. All appointments are subject to the approval of the Executive Director.

All prospective employees must pass a physical examination and drug screening by an Authority-designated physician. A pre-employment criminal history background check will also be conducted for all positions. For positions requiring use of an Authority vehicle, candidates' driving records will be checked prior to appointment. To be eligible for appointment, each candidate must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the Authority's insurer. All prospective employees must also provide proof of American citizenship, or legal resident status and the legal right to work in the United States.
