Phlebotomy Service Specialist

Job Description

As a Phlebotomy Service Specialist, you will be responsible for performing phlebotomy and various technical, non-technical, and clerical functions. You will ensure venipuncture and capillary collections are conducted accurately and efficiently according to laboratory protocols, while adhering to safety precautions and legal requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary collections accurately and efficiently according to laboratory protocols.
• Follow proper protocols for legal blood alcohol collections.
• Determine appropriate specimen requirements using standard collection techniques.
• Evaluate acceptability of specimens collected and ensure proper identification throughout the process.
• Obtain blood specimens via indwelling lines following universal safety precautions.
• Perform limited CLIA waived testing according to laboratory protocols.
• Utilize laboratory information systems and electronic medical records efficiently.
• Perform entry and release of laboratory orders.
• Follow site-specific EPIC procedures for patient registration and check-in.
• Resolve sample identification and order problems.
• Contact patients for repeat draws as needed.
• Recognize specimen requirements and perform specimen collection and handling as per instructions.
• Prioritize specimen collections appropriately.
• Respond to blood draw requests in a timely manner.
• Identify patients and label samples according to laboratory protocols.
• Process specimens according to individual testing protocols, ensuring accurate identification.
• Prepare specimens for transport to alternate testing laboratory sites.
• Perform EKGs, monitoring events, drug screen collections, breath alcohol testing, and spirometry.
• Set up cultures as per laboratory protocol.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and functional work area.
• Stock supplies and monitor expiration dates.
• Assist in training new employees and students in phlebotomy techniques and assigned duties.
• Perform maintenance duties accurately and timely.
• Complete scheduled checklist duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

• Phlebotomy certification
• 1 year of phlebotomy experience in a clinic or hospital lab setting
• Experience in specimen processing
• Blood draw proficiency
• Laboratory accessioning
• Sample preparation and labeling

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Point of Care Testing (POC Testing) experience is a plus

Work Environment

The position involves a mix of 1st and 2nd shift hours, with 1st shift running from either 0500-1330 or 0530-1400 and 2nd shift from 1330-2200. Weekend rotation is required every other weekend. The shift may vary from day to day.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $26.00/hr.
