Job Description
Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School is seeking a skilled piano player to accompany our Eurythmy classes for our school year 2024-25. Our first day of school is September 4 and the year ends June 13 with breaks in December, February and April. Applicants should be able to sight read classical music—although in general you will be given music in advance to practice before class.
Eurythmy, the art of making sound visible in movement, was developed by Rudolf Steiner as a performing art, a pedagogical practice, and a therapeutic activity. We are looking for a pianist who can play music to accompany classes taught to children in grades 1 through 12. We currently have one accompanist and will determine which classes each person plays for depending on availability. Classes generally happen between 10:30AM and 3:00 PM and you can expect 3-4 classes on each day that you work. A class lasts 45-55 minutes. Recompense is $35 per class. While preference will be given to candidates with experience playing as an accompanist for Eurythmy class, all skilled applicants can and should apply.
Located in the historic Hudson River Valley of New York State, our school is ideally situated on a 900-acre biodynamic farm surrounded by beautiful views of the nearby Catskill and Berkshire Mountains. Both natural beauty and cultural riches surround us, providing wonderful opportunities for our students, families, and teachers. The school is 2.5 hours north of New York City.
The school is a branch of the Hawthorne Valley Association (HVA), which supports several Anthroposophical initiatives including the Hawthorne Valley Farm and Farmstore, a Farm Apprenticeship program, a Farmscape Ecology Program, the Alkion Waldorf teacher-training program, Adonis Press, and a Place-Based Learning Center. The local area abounds with additional initiatives including a Christian Community Church and the Berkshire-Taconic Branch of the Anthroposophical Society. Our diverse student body includes the children of co-workers from three nearby Camphill communities.
