Job Description
Day Shift: M-F (or 4 10 hour days) - Weekend call requirement on a rotating basis - Outpatient
Summary The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specializing in comprehensive cancer care for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The ONP collaborates with supervising physicians to manage hematology-oncology patients and follows established treatment protocols. This role requires professionalism, clear communication, and strong collaboration skills. The ONP will manage a dynamic clinic environment, addressing needs ranging from primary care to complex chemotherapy side effect management.
Responsibilities Patient Care
- Triage calls from patients, physicians, hospitals, and agencies; escalate to physicians as needed
- Evaluate and treat acute conditions including oncologic emergencies and chemotherapy side effects
- Conduct histories, physical exams, diagnostic assessments, and initiate treatment plans
- Manage follow-up visits and adjust care plans based on patient progress
- Identify environmental and personal risk factors; coordinate care with social services, nurse navigation, and dietary teams
- Refer patients to specialists when care exceeds scope
Education and Collaboration
- Educate patients and families on chemotherapy and treatment plans
- Provide clinical education to office staff
- Collaborate with physicians to develop and review medical protocols
- Serve as a resource for staff and participate in oncology-related committees
Procedures and Rounding
- Assist with chemotherapy preparation, administration, and supervision
- Support office-based medical procedures
- Provide first-call coverage and participate in hospital rounds
- Act as inpatient point-of-contact for the oncology team
Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records
- Document assessments, plans, and visit findings
- Review and update policies and procedures periodically
- Adhere to safety standards and complete required annual education
Emergency Response
- Act as first responder to infusion-related emergencies or adverse reactions
Additional Duties
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications Education
- No specific degree required; must meet licensing and certification standards
Experience - No minimum experience required
Licensure and Certification
- Certification by ANA or AANP as Adult, Family, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Must meet Tennessee state requirements for Nurse Practitioners
- Oncology Nursing Society certification preferred
