Evaluate materials and develop machinery and processes to manufacture materials for use in products that must meet specialized design and performance specifications. Develop new uses for known materials. Includes those engineers working with composite materials or specializing in one type of material, such as graphite, metal and metal alloys, ceramics and glass, plastics, and polymers, and naturally occurring materials. Includes metallurgists and metallurgical engineers, ceramic engineers, and welding engineers. Develop application engineering analysis and material modifications for expanded application usage as required.
Position/Job Duties and Responsibilities
Materials engineers do the following:
Plan and evaluate new projects, consulting with other engineers and managers as necessary.
Prepare proposals, budgets, analyze labor costs, write reports, and perform other managerial tasks.
Supervise the work of technologists, technicians, and other engineers and scientists.
Determine and advise on a material's essential composition, atomic and molecular configuration, and processing.
Examine the interaction of materials in their processes and applications, considering the associated equipment, systems, components, and their fabrication, design, or use.
Develop, maintain, and apply materials and material solutions to meet certain mechanical, electrical, environmental, and chemical requirements.
Design and direct the testing of processing procedures.
Test and evaluate substances for new applications.
Monitor how materials perform and evaluate how they deteriorate.
Determine causes of product failure and develop ways of overcoming such failure.
Relate the material's essential composition to its properties, end use, and performance in engineering, architecture, and scientific applications and programs.
Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to the design objectives of processes or products.
Evaluate the impact of materials processing on the environment.
Provide full and accurate documentation for record keeping, as well as materials and processing comparison.
Perform Program Management functions as directed.
Provide miscellaneous duties as requested.
Job Location: Kettering, Ohio working at the SHEPRA, Inc. Research and Development Center in Kettering, Ohio. Temporary work locations may be assigned as needed.
