Job Overview:
A Service Captain plays a crucial role in delivering an exceptional dining experience by providing attentive, friendly, and professional service to guests. The Captain is responsible for taking orders, serving food and beverages, and ensuring customer satisfaction throughout the dining experience, while also focusing on tableside details. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Captains are also expected to have a deep knowledge of the menu, make recommendations, address any guest inquiries, and collaborate with kitchen and bar staff to ensure smooth service. The ability to communicate any guest allergy concerns confidently and accurately deliver dietary restrictions to the kitchen and service team is a must. A successful Service Captain is personable, efficient, and dedicated to creating a welcoming atmosphere for every guest.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guest Interaction:
    • Greet and warmly welcome guests upon arrival, providing detailed information on food and beverage offerings, including daily specials.
  • Order Taking:
    • Accurately take food and drink orders, relay them to the kitchen and bar, and ensure all modifications and special requests are communicated clearly.
  • Food and Beverage Service:
    • Serve food and beverages promptly and courteously, checking back with guests to ensure satisfaction and address any concerns or additional requests.
    • Assist with the setup and breakdown of service, including a lead role in running and closing side-work duties.
  • Menu Knowledge:
    • Maintain thorough knowledge of the menu, including ingredients, preparation methods, and beverage pairings, to answer guest questions and make recommendations.
  • Table Management:
    • Set and clear tables efficiently, ensuring cleanliness and readiness for the next guests.
  • Check Handling:
    • Present guest checks, process payments, and handle transactions accurately and responsibly.
  • Training and Development:
    • Assist in training junior staff on service techniques, steps of service, and proper etiquette.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Work closely with kitchen and bar staff to ensure smooth and coordinated service and assist with other tasks as needed to maintain a well-functioning dining environment.
  • Compliance:
    • Follow all health and safety regulations, including proper food handling and responsible alcohol service.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a server or in the hospitality industry is necessary for this role.
  • Strong customer service skills with a positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Knowledge of food safety standards and responsible alcohol service is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment:

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 8 hours or more) during shifts.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs (e.g., trays, food, beverage service items).
  • Capability to move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 lbs without assistance.
  • Must be able to grasp, turn, and manipulate objects of varying size and weight, requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and stoop to perform cooking tasks or handle tasks below the waist level.
  • Ability to move through narrow, confined, or elevated spaces (e.g., tight kitchen spaces or elevated service ramps).
  • Ability to work on sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces as well as up and down stairs.
  • Must have the ability to reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, and pulling.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail, especially during peak service hours.

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Ability to obtain any government-required licenses or certificates (e.g., food handling, responsible alcohol service).

Grooming:

  • All employees must maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance (specific standards are available).
