Job Description:
The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University's integrated health and wellness center which incorporates health promotion, counseling, health, and recreation. The Health Promotion Specialist is an 11-month position responsible for the hiring, development, and supervision of student peer educators, including student managers. The student team provides educational programs and outreach for the campus community.

The Health Promotion Specialist coordinates ongoing skill and content development opportunities for peer educators and coordinates trainings with campus partners on topics such as diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; mental wellness, sexual health, sexual and relationship violence prevention, and substance use harm reduction.

This Health Promotion Specialist has operational oversight for coordinating Pet Therapy offerings and maintains the Crowley Family MindSpa (and satellite locations), ensuring spaces for students to practice stress relief, and mindfulness.

The Health Promotion Specialist supports student wellness by working as part of a team that has oversight for student mental wellness programming and partnership with academic units; influencing the environments in which students live and learn.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to peer leaders including supervision and coaching, and development of student managers as supervisors. Supervisory responsibilities include oversight of meetings, coordination of 1:1's during the semester, conflict mediation as necessary, payroll support, ensuring shift coverage for programming and outreach facilitated by peer leaders, and fidelity of educational programs.
  • Coordinate the initial and ongoing peer leader training process, which includes training prior to the start of each semester to help student staff become well-versed in substance use harm reduction, sexual violence prevention, sexual health promotion, mental health promotion, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This includes both logistical support and coordination of internal and guest speakers/trainers throughout the training, as well as coordination of NASPA Certified Peer Educator Training.
  • Maintain the Crowley Family Mindspa and satellite campus locations. Responsible for space decor, equipment maintenance, and tracking utilization.
  • Responsible for coordinating Pet Therapy offerings and tracking utilization.
  • Support Mental Wellness Initiatives.
