Hazardous Waste Technician
BB&E is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.
Position Summary
BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Hazardous Waste Technician for BB&E’s NASA Ames Environmental Research Center Support Services Contract (ESS) to provide environmental services to the NASA Ames Program Team.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for collecting hazardous waste research and development (R&D) lab waste.
- Responsible for collecting medical waste.
- Segregate and process hazardous waste according to hazard class.
- Bulk various types of solvents for flammable liquid & non-RCRA liquid drums.
- Lab pack hazardous waste & medical waste.
- Perform hazardous waste pick-ups, on-site transportation, waste sampling, waste classification, waste packaging, manifesting, and tracking of waste containers from cradle-to-grave.
- Provide support and guidance to hazardous waste generators regarding proper labeling, storage, and management of hazardous waste.
- Coordinate pick up of hazardous waste and mixed waste within three (3) business days of receipt of a fully completed Form A and safely transport hazardous waste on-site back to the less than 90-day accumulation area and/or radioactive waste storage facility using a government-provided vehicle.
- Coordinate pickup, store, and prepare for shipment medical waste generated at the Center according to regulatory requirements.
- Perform hazardous waste sampling activities and prepare paperwork and samples for shipment to a State-certified laboratory.
- Perform PCB wipe sampling activities and prepare paperwork and samples for shipment to a State-certified laboratory.
- Properly segregate and store hazardous waste by hazard class and compatibility.
- Coordinate provision of all containers needed for the storage and disposal of hazardous waste to all hazardous waste generators.
- Classify and package hazardous waste and prepare for shipment and disposal offsite.
- Prepare a properly executed Uniform Hazardous Waste manifest for signature by an authorized NASA representative from the EMD.
- Maintain records related to hazardous waste disposal, including analytical results, waste profiles, manifests, and land ban forms.
- Bulk inorganic acid & bases and enter data into tracking system.
- Pick up and transport unused, unopened chemicals to the Ames Chemical Exchange (ACE) program for reuse or recycling and maintain accurate inventory of chemicals.
- Pickup and transport unused, unopened chemicals to the Central Chemical Storage Facility for storage for future use by the owner and maintain accurate inventory of chemicals.
- Help conduct quarterly inspections of all PCB-containing items at the Center and prepare PCB annual document log report for government approval.
- Conduct and document weekly compliance inspections at the hazardous waste facilities.
- Perform initial inspections for Satellite Accumulation Area Determinations.
- Prepare monthly Hazardous Waste generator activity reports including generator name, waste location, organization code, waste storage date, item identification number, waste name and description, and weight.
- Maintain 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and applicable US DOT Certification.
- Provide support and participate in internal environmental regulatory compliance audits, annual self-assessments, and other audits and inspections.
Key Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship is required
- Ability to successfully pass a federal agency background check is required.
- Knowledge:
- Experience preparing hazardous waste turn-in, shipping, and tracking documents.
- Prior hazardous waste lab pack disposal experience.
- Practical knowledge of HW management, a solid understanding of hazardous material identification and management.
- Familiarity with sources of information pertaining to chemical and radiological hazards.
- The ability to safely move and load heavy drums and containers containing harmful products.
- Handling, processing, packaging, and tracking hazardous waste for shipment, treatment, and disposal.
- Familiarity with hazardous waste regulations and procedures.
- OSHA and State and Federal Hazardous Waste regulations.
- Problem-solving skills to identify and address any issues that may arise during the waste management process, minimizing risks and preventing accidents.
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Software: Proficiency using GIS software and MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
- Self-Starter: Highly motivated, with the ability to solve problems and function as a member of a team.
Experience & Education
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years’ related experience is required.
- Certification and Training: 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is required ; Certified Hazardous Materials Management (CHMM) Certification preferred; First Aid/CPR Certification preferred.
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to walk, sit, and/or stand for extended periods for multiple days/weeks
- Able to operate office equipment, including computers, copy machine, phone, etc.
- Capable of light lifting, up to 80 lbs.
- Working conditions:
- Able to work both indoors/outdoor (with exposure to the elements)
- Able to walk/climb/knee/crouch and reach
- Able to work on rough terrain when necessary
- Able to work in confined spaces and/or heights
- Able to wear the required PPE, minimally wear gloves, a hard hat, a respirator, and steel-toe boots that may be in combination with protective clothing/suits, a respirator, and/or a fall restraint/recovery harness
- Exposure to hazards/contaminants at times
