Position Summary

Hamilton-Madison House’s Early Childhood Education Program supports and enhances the existing strengths of child care through programs that promote continuous and responsive relationships, strengthen early learning skills, build resilience, and lay the foundation for all future learning. Hamilton-Madison House views family childcare as a respected and valued profession within the early care and education system in New York City.

The Education Directors is responsible for setting the tone for the facility, managing the curriculum, overseeing physical facilities, participate in hiring process and managing the overall image of the center. Also ensure compliance with all local and federal laws governing child care, both in regard to the physical environment and the staff, and assist with the financial affairs of the child care facility.

Curriculum Development

Education Directors work with qualified center staff to develop an appropriate curriculum and ensure that it complies with state and federal requirements. In the case of specialized schools (academic and development) requirements, such as, the education director ensures that the curriculum complies with the specific requirements of that designation and inclusive of all general and special education assessment and data requirements.

Facilities Management

Education Directors make sure that the center's physical facilities comply with local, state and federal laws and are a safe and appropriate environment for children. Education Directors have knowledge of local, state and federal laws regarding safety requirements and inspection and certification procedures, and ensure that the center complies with those requirements. The Education Director also evaluates and assists in purchasing process of equipment and supplies for the center or submits requests to purchase materials and equipment.

Staffing Management

Child Care Centers are generally staffed by teachers, teacher aides, assistants and other individuals; for example, larger centers might have administrative or custodial staffs. The Education Director manages this staff, develops job descriptions, interviews candidates, maintain staff development and education and, if necessary, manage disciplinary processes.

The Education Director ensures that all staff meet the requirements for their jobs; for example, the director orders staff background checks and confirms that necessary licenses are valid. Education Directors are also responsible for maintaining their own qualifications as well as staff.

Parental Communication and Involvement

While for many parents, their child's teacher is the primary point of contact in the school, the Education Director often serves as the 'face' of the school, managing communication with parents and the community. The Education Director recommends policies for the school and communicates approved policies to parents. Directors also often meet with parents of prospective students to determine whether the school is a good fit for the family.

Financial Responsibilities

Education Directors are responsible for the financial management of the center. This means that they assist in budget management, development and maintenance. The director also participates and supports the marketing plan for the center, developing public relations and advertising campaigns as necessary.

Technology

Education Directors are required to utilize and adapt to technology requirements for all program operations: student enrollment tracking and monitoring, personnel data tracking, special education and related service data for student, family and community services data through the use of MS Word, Excel, Publisher and Child Care software and ACS WES enrollment system.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day activities at a preschool both academic and environmental requirements in accordance with DOH/DOE/HEAD START, etc.
  • Oversee classroom staffing, paperwork and curriculum to ensure proper coverage and compliance with DOHMH (Article 47), DOE and Head Start regulations
  • Assist teachers with daily supervision of classroom activities when necessary
  • Oversee and maintain the implementation of high quality programming with evidence based curricular and child outcomes, including lesson planning, observations, portfolios and Parent/Teacher conferences
  • Assist in the planning and execution of the program to provide child care for children which takes into account the educational, social, developmental and health needs of the group, as well as the individual child
  • Demonstrate strong supervisory skills and leadership qualities
  • Establish and maintain strong professional relationships based upon mutual respect and shared goals
  • Provide guidance, training and coaching to teaching staff on implementing lesson plans and responding to the social emotional needs of young children
  • Responsible for documenting meetings, trainings and in service workshops
  • Continuous written observations of staff and yearly evaluations based upon those observations
  • Support staff in meeting the individual needs of children through individualized planning, which also includes input from the child’s family
  • Work collaboratively with other supervisors to implement the program to its fullest
  • Assist in the review of program practices and update program plans, policies and procedures
  • Responsible for upholding Hamilton Madison House’s philosophy and ensuring proper communication with staff
  • Monitor and evaluate the instructional methods/effectiveness and ensure the fidelity of educational and student activity programs
  • Maintain a safe a nd productive work environment through timely communication and consistent administration of Hamilton Madison House disciplinary practices in cases of unsatisfactory job performance, misconduct, or behavior that violates HMH policies/procedures
  • Work with n ew and current families to foster student and program success
  • Continuously communicate with other supervisors and teachers in an effort to keep all parties informed and up to date
  • Ensure environmental health, safety and nutrition requirements for all program needs.
  • Create instructional resources for use in the classroom.
  • Develop and support the monitoring and management of academic and special educational services for programs’ needs.
  • Monitor students and teachers for progress.
  • Train, encourage, and mentor teachers and other staff.
  • Manage career counseling.
  • Administer record keeping.
  • Supervise teachers, and other support staff.
  • Maintain rapport with parents.
  • Handle tours and marketing.
  • Prepare budgets and annual reports.
  • Work actively with teachers to maintain high curriculum standards.
  • Establish performance goals and objectives.
  • Explain or answer procedural questions.
  • Participate in hiring, training, and evaluation of teachers.
  • Visit classrooms and observe teaching methods.
  • Examine learning materials.
  • Review instructional objectives and adjust accordingly.
  • Meet with other administrators, parents, and community organizations.

Qualifications :

  • NYS Teaching Certification in Nursey – 6, K -6, Birth – 2 or Special Education is required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an Early Childhood Program Administrator
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an Early Childhood Program Teacher
  • Previous experience with NAEYC accreditation, Federal Head Start/Pre-K for All/DOE/DOH requirements a plus
  • SAS School Building Leader or School District Leader NYS Certification a plus

Compensation : $72,500 to &75,000 Annually, Excellent Benefits

Hours : Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week
