Job Description

The Marlboro Institute for Liberal Arts & Interdisciplinary Studies at Emerson College is looking to fill two sections of Radical Women in Contemporary History (HI 227), one section of Demystifying Revolutionaries: Race, Imperialism, and Transformative Change in Latin America (HI310) and one section of Advanced Topics in U.S. History: The Long Civil Rights Movement (HI314) for the Fall semester, September 4, 2024-December 17, 2024.

Radical Women in Contemporary History (HI 227, Tues/Thurs. 10am and 12pm) examines the critical essays, speeches, memoirs, documentaries, performance art work and organizational work of a diverse group of women throughout the twentieth and twenty-first century world who specifically articulated demands for justice. As a class, we will also review how each of these women defined justice, the limits and potentials of the justice they invoked, the context and uniqueness of their work, the reactions they received from their peers and wider society, and how questions of race, class, gendered norms, and sexuality affected and/or inspired their calls for change.

Demystifying Revolutionaries: Race, Imperialism, and Transformative Change in Latin America (HI310, Tues./Thurs. 4pm) examines the misconceptions, assumptions, and myths surrounding men like Ernesto "Che" Guevara by tracing how their ideas are indebted to a long history of conquistadores, insurgents, writers, and radical thinkers in colonial and modern Latin America. Through this examination, students also review the attempts to erase women and other viewed as nonconforming from popularized histories of change and revolution.

Advanced Topics in U.S. History: The Long Civil Rights Movement (HI314, Tues./Thurs. 2pm) explores the Long Civil Rights Movement from the era of Reconstruction to modern day. While the Civil Rights Movement is generally thought to exist within the confines of the 1950s and 1960s with leaders like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and groups such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, historians and scholars recognize that the modern freedom movement began much earlier than that. Students will read articles and books by leading historians of this movement and engage with a plethora of primary sources to better understand the stages and development of the long civil rights movement.

All three courses fulfill the History and Politics Perspective. HI227 and HI310 additionally fulfill the Global Diversity and Justice Perspective.

For the Fall 2024 term, each is scheduled to meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 1 hour and 45 minutes beginning at the times indicated above.

Enrollment for is capped at 30 students for HI221 and 20 students for the 300-level courses and each will take place in-person on the Boston campus.

The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity-in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the college's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities.
