PARALLEL LINES
Dir. Nina Davenport

Documentary, USA, 2003, Digital, 98 min.

SYNOPSIS
Parallel Lines chronicles the filmmaker’s journey in the fall of 2001 from California back home to New York, where her apartment once overlooked the World Trade Center. Driving along back roads as she slowly winds her way to Ground Zero. She stops to talk with strangers about September 11th, which unexpectedly provides a unique window into the inner lives of Americans. The people she encounters at random inevitably want to share their own personal stories of loss: a woman tells of losing custody of her children, a veteran describes a veteran describes his battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a cowboy reveals that his mother murdered his father, a Native American speaks with anger about the destruction of his culture and language. The film weaves together a wide range of subjects, from the meaning of love to the horror of the atomic bomb, becoming a portrait of American identity. These poignant glimpses along the open road of an America in mourning reveal heartache, humor, surprise and, above all, the drive to endure.
